Reinsman Van Hargis Transition Series #1
#271A – Stage A
Offset Dee ⅜” Twisted Dogbone
Snaffle 5” Mouth 3” Dee
The Van Hargis Progressive Bit System was designed to gradually transition a horse from the two-handed direct rein communication of the Van Hargis Off-set D-ring snaffle to the subtle one-handed refined communication of the mild and comfortable Van Hargis All-Around Performance bit. Each bit further refines communication and prepares the horse for the next step of performance until the ultimate in communication and performance is achieved. This is a system of champions for champions.
The Sweet Iron Twisted Three-Piece Dogbone Snaffle is another carefully thought out bit with the same design as 271, but with twisted sweet iron for refinement. It boasts the same D-ring characteristic and the same palatable sweet iron steel yet it has a three-piece mouth. Unlike most dogbone designs, I have shortened the length of the centerpiece. This design still sends an easily detectable signal to the corners of the horse’s mouth but virtually eliminates the possibility of bumping the palate when both reins are used simultaneously.
Are You Riding with Both Hands? Stage A bits are great for starting horses, training, or maintaining steady contact. Aspects include direct reining, non-leverage Loose Rings and Dee Rings with mouthpiece diameters 5/16” and over.
Sweet iron naturally rusts into a light patina. The rust creates a sweet taste for the horse and makes the bit more acceptable and increases salivation for a supple mouth. Mullen relief is used on all our snaffle mouthpieces which is a forward curve that creates even pressure across the bars and tongue to eliminate the nutcracker effect.
GOLDEN GLIDE BUSHINGS –
• Further enhance the smoothness of the independent cheek movement allowing for more precise cues
• Eliminate the cheek connection from pinching the horse’s lips
• Smooths the movement of the cheek piece for better feel and performance
“Whether I’m starting a young horse, tuning a performance horse or helping a horse overcome an issue, my first choice of bit is my smooth-mouth offset d-ring snaffle by Reinsman. With this bit, there’s no chance of ever pinching a horse’s cheeks because they are made with a unique brass bushing between the bit mount and the stainless steel d-rings.” – Van Hargis
Van Hargis is a horseman with a message. He is of today’s most versatile horsemen, a designation that reflects a lifetime devoted to learning-and communicating-the elements of superior horsemanship as applied in a variety of disciplines.
